The donkey’s heavy burden?

Today, many a donkey remain in Greece. In peak season, they can carry more than 1,000 tourists up the steep hills of Santorini. Recently, officials have expressed concern over the growing number of overweight riders. Donkeys should carry no more than 20 percent of their body weight; above that they can suffer crippling spinal injuries. One solution proposed by a local charity is to place a weight restriction on those wishing to hitch a ride up the hills. Indeed, as Dionysus’ steed would surely tell you, whether hauling god or tourist, every donkey has its limit.
