Is Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, “overexposed”?

July 18, 2018—Meghan, Duchess of Sussex (formerly Meghan Markle, American actress), has been criticized for crossing her legs in the presence of Queen Elizabeth, crossing the arcane line, as it were, of courtly protocol. Where exactly that line is, and for what reasons, is hard to see—this Peter Paul Rubens’ oil sketch seems to suggest that even hundreds of years ago you could get away with showing a partially clothed England personified. Wardrobe malfunction or fashion statement? Who could say?

“Why do they have to cover their knees?” asked Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, in The Sun newspaper. And the guy has a point. Rubens showed King James, after all, covering a whole lot less.
